Herb from New Jersey was recently visiting Maui with his longtime girlfriend Alyssa and was ready to “pop the big question.”
Herb reached out to Maui photographer Ben Kottke to not only capture the special moment of the proposal itself but afterwards also shoot a short but sweet couples session of the newly engaged couple.
In addition to the photoshoot, at Herb’s request, Ben helped source local favorite singer and ukulele player Kalo Deleon, hired portrait photographer/up and coming videographer Deelia Nelson to capture and edit a video of the special day, and sourced some flower petals to form a “sprinkle of flowers” in the sand.
On the special day that afternoon the weather in Makena at a semi secret “non touristy beach” looked like it may rain but right before Herb and Alyssa showed up to “go for a walk” the sun came out and a small rainbow even appeared briefly.
There were less than 10 people on the entire beach, the sun was shining and there was not a breath of wind.
As Herb and Alyssa walked down the beach, Ben and Deelia were poised and ready with their cameras ready. Kalo was already playing “Marry me” by Train in front of an empty circle-patch of flower petals and as Herb directed Alyssa up to stand on the flowers he got on one knee, told Alyssa how much he loved her, wanted to spend the rest of his life with her, and asked if she would marry him. With tears of joy in her eyes she said yes, Herb put the ring on her finger, and they embraced. The handful of people on the beach cheered. After that Ben and Deelia captured incredible images and video of the two as the Maui sun set and then Herb and Alyssa left for a celebrator dinner at one of Maui’s many great restaurants in Wailea.
